Caol Ila

Also known as Glen Isla : The name is pronounced "cull-eela" = "South of Islay"  in Danish it soulds alot like Kål Ihhh-la.
The Gaelic word "caol" is more familiar as "kyle"
The Ila is short for Islay / Island
They use ex-bourbon and sherry cask's
The distillery have 3 wash stills and 3 spirit stills.
You will have a hard time finding Caol Ila as a standard bottling from the distillery, but you may find it from independent bottlers such as : James MacArthur & Company, Gordon & MacPhail, United Distillers, Master of Malt, Blackadder and Wm. Cadenhead.
From our visit at the distillery we now have the following facts.:
Caol Ila uses whatever barley they can get as this is not important when producing Caol Ila whiskies.
The Warehouse has 3 floors to store the barrels, but most of the barrels holds/stores Lagavulin

The warehouse is NOT open to public.
Driving from Bowmore area towards Caol Ila - you'll se a beautiful nature, lots of hills where nature is covered with heather / moor and ferns.
(Between Caol-Ila and Bunnahabhain you would also se a lake where it is possible to do some Trout fishing.

Caol Ila Distillery, Islay

Caol Ila (Gaelic for 'the Sound of Islay') was built in 1846 by Hector Henderson, a Glasgow businessman with a keen interest in distilling. The distillery is hidden in a quiet cove near Port Askaig, overlooking the Sound of Islay. The water source for Caol Ila is the peaty Loch Nam Ban about a mile away from which the water flows through fields, arriving at a waterfall near the distillery. The six stills are large and lentern shaped. Caol Ila was built in 1846, reconstructed in 1879 and rather brusquely modernised in the 1970s.

Caol Ila is considered to be one of the lighter of the Islays. Medium-bodied with a rounded flavour. Pale in colour with a greenish tinge. This malt has a peaty nose, with distinct floral notes. It is described as tasting slighty of seaweed/iodine, lightly medicinal, smoky, salty, sweet with a dry peppery finish.

The Clynelish distillery in Brora is an exact replica of Caol Ila. Most of the production is used in blends (90%) such as Bell's, White Horse,  Johnnie Walker and Black Bottle. The distillery is the greatest of Islay, and produces over 3.000.000 litres a year.

Det här är en tämligen civiliserad Islay -- ja, en adlig smak, kanske
man kan säga. Mycket god. Den förekommer faktiskt i en roman som jag gav
ut nu i höst, Gyllene Gåsen, som utspelar sig på en krog med samma namn.
I kapitel 2 presenteras krogens dryckesmästare, och där står det så här:

"Dryckesmästaren heter Katz. Hans uppgift är att smörja maskineriet. Med
samma glädje som han bär fram ett glas utsökt Caol Ila presenterar han
en stork stark och en törstig sjåare för varandra."

Ja, det kunde ju vara intressant att veta, tänkte jag...
