Speyburn Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky was first produced onthe 15th of December 1897 and the facinating story of a nuique Highland Scotch Whisky had begun.

There are manu beautifully situated distilleries in Scotland but few cas surpass the sight of Speyburn sitting majestically in a corner of the Spey vally at the foot of the densely wooded rolling hills on the outskirts of the quiet Highland town of Rothes.
A distinctive feature of this Victorian distillery is its two and three storey buildings, the architect preferring the use of height to width on the sloping three acre site.

The result is a beauty to behold with the traditional pagoda streching skywards from the bottom of the vally against a backdrop f pines, as can be viewed from the overlooking road between Rothes and Elgin.

The Spey Vally with its fast flowing River Spey is famous as the home of many of the world's finest Scotch Whiskies, and Speyburn Single Highland Malt proudly takes its place among this select group.

The all-important crystal-clear, fresh spring water, acknowledged as a distinctive characteristic in the unique flavour and bouquet of all Single Malt Scotch Whiskies, is taken from the nearby Granty Burn, one of the major tributaries to the River Spey.

Speyburn is the only Highland distillery to use this particular, soft Speyside water in the production of its whisky.

The distillery was built from carved stones taken from the former bed of the River Spey. When production first started in 1897, the stillhouse had not yet been fitted with windows or doors; and as a fierce snowstorm was sweeping through the vally the men had to work in overcoats. the distillers were anxious to have some cask filled bearing the date 1897 - because this was the diamond jubilee year of Queen Victoria - just one butt was bonded.



The resulting spirit which is gently tempted from the two beautifully crafted copper stills has until recently only been available to discerning blenders and a privileged few. The owners now wish to share the splendour and mysteque of this hitherto extremly rare Malt with connoisseurs of Scotch whisky the world over.

The founders of Speyburn were John Hopkins and Co. Ltd. of London and Glasgow.
Speyburn Distillery went into production on the 15th December 1897.
The distillery is known as 'The Gibbet' because of its situation near the ancient 'Cnock na Croiche' or 'Hillock of the Gibbet'.
The first manager was a Mr. John Smith who held the position for 31 years. (AWA ed.: in year 2000 = Bobby)
The original annual capacity was 100000 Gallons..
Speyburn was the first Scottish Malt Distillery to install a steam-driven mechanical malting system.
A tractor replaced the distillery's horse and cart in the 1950's which was used to transport the coal, barley and casks from Rothes Station.
1962. Speyburn's two stills were converted to internal heating by steam from a coal-fired boiler.
1992. Speyburn 10 years Old Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky is marketed world-wide.

Speyburn Distillery, Speyside


Speyburn was founded by John Hopkins in 1897, the diamond jubilee year of Queen Victoria. To make sure that whisky was distilled in the jubilee year, men worked through the night in a heavy snow storm in a still house without windows, managing to bond one single butt of 1897 Speyburn.

Nestled in a picturesque valley, close to Rothes, Speyburn has been purchased in 1916 by Distillers Company, which would become later the drinks giant Diageo. Speyburn was eventually acquired by Inver House Group in 1991.

The distillery has been at the cutting edge of distillation innovation and equipment. As early as the first decades in the 20th century, Speyburn was the first to use malting drums, which stopped working in 1968 and is also one of the very few distilleries to use traditional 'worm tubs' to condense the spirit vapour in to liquid, adding complexity to the final product.
