Ben Nevis Distillery, standing at the foot of Scotland's highest mountain, is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. It was founded at Fort William by the famous local character. the 'Long' John Macdonald in 1825. (The brand name of Long John and the distillery company became separated.) After more than 100 years and three generations in the family, the distillery was sold in 1941. The subsequent addition of a patent still made the distillery one of the few that could produce both malt and grain under one roof, and it received a new lease of life in the late 1980's following its acquisition by the Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. of Japan.

I have been assured that a whisky probably from Ireland or Scotland by the name of BARLEYCORN exists. I cannot find it in the superb lists that you have created. Any chance of finding out more about the above-mentioned whisky? – I would be very grateful.

I've been surfing around on different web-search engines looking for Barleycorn – The only reply is : 1. John Barleycorn. / Books / Songs etc. Irish singer.. (Singing Pub song's (Also mention a Barleycorn grain !) Some pub's and a homebrew shop. Perhaps it's a homemade whisky made on the Sir John Barleycorn Pub in Ireland. ?

Water : Springs on Fiskaidly Farm.
Another wild guess – The river Deveron.
Remark :

Banff :

The town Banff giving the name to this distillery which was damaged by a fire in 1877 and bombed in the Second World War
It provided whisky for the members of Parliment/House of commons and was used in the Slater Roger Blends.
Resently hard to find as a single malt due to its owner D.C.L. (Distillers Company Limited) closed the distillery in 1983.

From www.Whiskyweb.com :
One of the first distilleries located to take advantage of the railways. On Saturday, 16th August, 1941, a single German plane machine-gunned and bombed No 12 Warehouse. Exploding casks flew through the air and a local newspaper reported, ".f . . thousands of gallons of whisky were lost, either burning or running to waste over the land . . . even farm animals became intoxicated" Cows were not milked because they could not be got to their feet. Banff was known locally as "Inverboyndie distillery"

From the Whisky pilot by Uniqum Systems :
Built in 1824 Banff distillery was then rebuilt on a new site in 1863 and once more in 1877 after being burnt down. It was closed and dismantled in 1983.
The name comes from the location of the distillery, situated at the Mill of Banff, west of the mouth of the River Deveron. The water supply came from a spring on Fiskaidly Farm. One of the first distilleries located to take advantage of the railways.

BALVENIE, THE.

Location : Dufftown, Keith, Banffshire, Gramp Region.
Region : Highland Speyside
Country : Scotland
Type : Single Malt.
Distillery :  William Grant & Sons Ltd. / The Balvenie Distillery.
Not open to visitors.
Founded : Est./ built in 1892
Water : Robbie Dubh and Fiddich Burn. (Same as Glenfiddich.)
Remark : The Balvenie distillery has been owned and managed by an independent family company for five generations
This has ensured that the Balvenie distillery is still dedicated to the traditions, care and craftsmanship of malt whisky making.
Nowhere else will you find a distillery that still grows its own barley, that still malts in its own traditional floor maltings, that still coopers to tend the barrels, and coppersmiths to tend the stills.
The Balvenie range of single malt whiskies is unique.
Three single malt whiskies of different age and different character. Each Balvenie single malt reflects in its individuality, different aspects of the tradition, skill and care that are the hallmarks of the Balvenie Distillery.
A distillery firmly rooted in its past but forever seeking to refine the art of making malt whisky.

From the book 'The Scottish Collection' Classic Malts by Carol P. Shaw :
Founder's Reserve (10 years old) has a rich colour, bouquet and flavour with a smooth, clean, dry finish. Doublewood (12 years old) is full-bodied, yet smooth and mellow, and Single Barrel, a harder-to-obtain 15 years old, is a single cask bottling. Taste Rating 3-4
Built in 1892 near the ruins of fourteenth-century Balvenie Castle by the Grants of Glenfiddich (and next to the Glenfiddich distillery), Balvenie Distillery has now been owned by an independent family company for five generations. Balvenie Distillery still grows its own barley, malts in its own traditional floor maltings, employs coopers to tend the barrels and coppersmiths to tend the stills. The Balvenie is most unusual in producing a range of three malt whiskies of different age and caracter.

Balvenie is one of the last stills using floormalting.
Only a small part of floormalted malt are used in Balvenie – aprox 30%.

Owner : Since 1922 -> Distillers Company Ltd.

Remark : From the book 'The Scottish collection' Classic Malts by Carol P. Shaw:
Tasting notes : A complicated, full-bodied malt, best suited os an after-dinner dram. Taste Rating = 4
The Balmenach Distillery, in the Haughs of Cromdale, is set in an area which was notorious for illicit distilling for many years before the Licensing Act of 1823. Built in 1824 by James McGregor (great-grandfather of Sir Robert Bruce Lockhart, author of the slassic 1951 book, Scotch), Balmenach was one of the first distilleries in the Highlands to be licensed under the 1923 act. The distillery was acquired by United Distillers and most of its production went into the company's blends but has since been closed. The single malt is still relatively rare, only becomming available in official bottlings in the Distillery (Flora and Fauna) Malt series early in the 1990's.

Balmenach is used in Crabbie's blends

From the Whisky pilot by Uniqum Systems :
Built in 1824 by James McGregor, Balmenach was one of the first distilleries in the Highlands to become legitimate after the Licensing Act of 1823. Located in a stretch of land known as the Haughs of Cromdale, meaning a series of valleys, this area once was notorious for illicit distilling.
Bought by SMD in 1930 and extended from four stills to six stills in 1962. A Saladin Box malting system was installed in 1964 and used until the mid- 1980's. Bought by United Distillers plc, but was closed and mothballed at the end of May, 1993. United Distillers sold it to Inver House Distillers in December 1997. The distillery has three low wines and three spirit stills each which still has its own worm tub. Production started on the 2nd of March 98 and it is planned toproduce 1,200,000 litres to end 1998.
A branch line was built to the distillery in the late 1880s and the steam engine which worked the line is preserved on the Strathspey railway at Aviemore.
Local lore tells that farmer James McGregor was visited by an excise officer just after the 1823 Excise Act had been passed. He was shown round the farm and experienced typical hospitality with a bottle of fine whisky. The officer then pointed out an outbuilding and asked what it was used for. "That's just the peat shed," came the reply. The officer said nothing, and continued to enjoy his whisky. After a few more drams, the officer made to leave.
"If I were you, Mr McGregor," he said, "I'd take out a licence for that peat shed. " McGregor took the hint and took out the necessary licence.
The distillery lies in a bowl in the hills off the A95 main road heading towards Bridge of Avon from Grantown- on-Spey. The distillery stands about a mile from the former Cromdale station on the Spey Valley railway line.
Visitors by appointment only.
Production water comes from the Creagan a" Chaise, part of the Cromdale hills, via the Resmuden and Cordon burns."

Danish Remark : Balmenach single malt forhandles også i Danmark som "Deerstalker" single highland malt 12 år 40%, en købmandslicens der går tilbage til 1881 – en af de skotske købmandsklassikere.

BALBLAIR

Location : Dornoch Firth, Edderton near Tain, Ross-shire. Highland Region.
Region : Northern Highland
Country : Scotland
Type : Single Malt
Distillery :  Balblair
Edderton, Ross-shire
Phone : 0862 82273
The distillery has no reception centre, but visitors are welcome by appointment.
Founded : 1790 by an unknown founder – later expanded by Andrew Ross & Son.
Balblair is the second oldest working distillery in Scotland.
Owner : Originally owned by Allied Distillers and recently purchased by Inver House.
According to Mr. Boyle, the company hopes to launch Balblair as a single malt in Duty Free shops sometime in 1998.
Producer : Allied Distillers perhaps taken over by Inver House.
Water : From Ben Dearg, the water flow into the River Carron and thence to the Dornoch Firth and the sea. A burn near the distillery feeds Balblair.
Remark : Balblair has two Gaelic meanings – 'battlefield' or 'town of the plain', which date back to the first Viking landings in Ross-shire. Edderton, the home of Balblair, is known as the 'parish of the peat'. With the local supply of peat and soft water from the Struie Hills, Balblair Distillery is perfectly situated.
Balblair began as a simple pot still distillery, under the watchfull eye of John Ross. By 1887 the distillery had been expanded up the hill and it reported an output of 50,000 gallons a year. The distillate is not yet bottled by the present owners Inver House, but Balblair remains a full working distillery.
The Balblair whisky is a component of the Ballantine's blends.

From the book 'The Scottish Collection' – classic malts by Carol P. Shaw:
Although its origins are lost in the mists of illicit distillation, it is claimed that Blablair was founded in 1749, which would make it one fo the oldest distilleries in the country. The present buildings, dating from 1870's, are set in pretty contryside in an area known as the 'parish of peats'. The distillery had very recently been mothballed by its then owners, Allied Distillers, but was acquired from them in the spring of 1996 by the independent Inver House Distillers. The addition of Balblair gives Inver Houose four malt distilleries – Knockdhu, Speyburn-Glenlivet and Pultney, the latter also a recent purchase from Allied.

Remark : Made from the recipe preferred by Baker Beam, grand nephew of Jim Beam, Baker's Bourbon embodies over six generations of distilling experience.
Baker's Bourbon utilizes a special strain of jug yeast that has been in Baker's family for over 60 years.
This time tested yeast provides Baker's with a silky smooth texture and consistent taste from batch to batch.
The mix of grains, yeast and seven soothing years in new oak combine to give this bourbon a deeply mellow, richly flavorful, medium bodied taste.
Baker's is best served in a snifter with a splash of spring water.
