Remark : | MacPhails / Gordon & MacPhail's :Gordon & MacPhail's is a success full company and independent bottler. We are a lot of whisky lovers who own a great thanx to Gordon & MacPhail making it possible for us "Whisky Geeks" to enjoy rare whiskies from different distilleries, maltballed or closed. If you have read some of the pages on this site you may have seen different bottlings from Gordon & MacPhail's - vintages, and lots from the Connoisseurs Choice range. From the Whisky pilot by Uniqum Systems : In 1895 Mr Gordon met with Mr MacPhail and they decided that they should start a company, a grocery store, in Elgin. The company had modern premises located at 38-40 South Street. The shop opened on the 24th of May, 1895 and they was granted a permission to sell alcohol just two weeks earlier. Mr Gordon who had a long experience in trading with different goods knew how to select high quality goods, bacon as well as coffee. But his special concern lay within the whisky trade and he had excellent knowledge of the distilleries in the surrounding Speyside area. He was soon assisted by a former apprentice, John Urquhart and together they traded with the many distilleries. The Pattison crash had comparatively small effects on Gordon & MacPhail's business as they, although they made lots of whisky trading, all the way had maintained the grocery side of the business. In 1915 John MacPhail felt that he had worked enough and decided that it was time for him to retire. John Urquhart entered the company as Mr Gordon's new partner on the 1st of April, 1915. However, their partnership did only last for two weeks before fate altered the situation. Mr Gordon had a fatal heart attack and therefore John Urquhart was appointed as a senior partner of the business, while Mr Gordon's widow was appointed as a co-partner. By the WWI Gordon & MacPhail's shop had a reputation as a reliable supplier of Highland whisky and Mr Urquhart was determined to maintain the high standards provided by the old owners. After WWI the company started exporting whisky and the whisky department of the company grew steadily over the next decades. In the mid-war period the company was turned into a family business as John's youngest son, George and his daughter Betty joined the business. During WWII Gordon & MacPhail sold whisky to USA in order to gain dollars for the war efforts. George was damaged during 1941 and after he had recovered he returned to the shop, where he and his father joined forces and together they kept business going despite rationing and personal shortage. After the war George's elder brother Gordon joined the company and he was later made a junior partner. They exported whisky, mostly blended whisky, but they continued to maintain a large stock of single malts and they were also one of the pioneers in selling bottled single malt whisky. The business expanded during the next decades. By 1991 the company moved to new offices built as an extension of existing warehouses and its from there that the company keeps control of the whisky stocked all over Scotland, as well as marketing and economics. Almost a century after the company was first started they finally achieved a long wanted goal, by buying their first own distillery, the Benromach. The stills had been removed but that suited Mr George, as George Urquhart is fondly known, as he wished to produce the whisky from smaller stills. The distillery is to distil again, probably during 1995 or 1996 and thereby closing the Gordon & MacPhail circle as they from then for the first time will be able to sell their first genuinely produced whisky. |
