The still is on the edge of the pretty town of the same name. (It still the 'heart malt' of their blend - the most popular Scotch in the U.S.A.) Aberfeldy Distillery was constructed somewhere around 1896-97, depending on your source, but opened for production in 1898. Aberfeldy is located in the rasberry-growing region of Scotland and overlooks the Tay Valley. The red squirrel on the label is inspired by the beautiful woodland setting that borders the distillery and is home to a colony of rare red squirrels. The distillery has been in continuous production since its inception, except for a short period during World War II. Almost all of its production now goes into United Distiller's blends, most notably Dewar's White Label. The single malt is relatively rare, usualy only becoming available in official bottlings in the Distillery. From The book : The Scottish Collection / Classic Malts by Carol P. Shaw Tasting Notes : Basicly a dry malt with a medium body and clean, fresh character, but with a distinctly peaty background. Aberfeldy Distillery stands near the River Tay, at the town from which it takes its name. Building began in 1896 and the distillery opned two years later. It was built by Dewar but passed with that company into the ownership of the Distillers Company Ltd. in 1925. Almost all of its production now goes into United Distillers' blends, most notably Dewar's White Label. The single malt is still relatively rare, only becomming available in official bottlings in the Distillery (Flora and Fauna) Malts series early in the 1990's. From the Whisky pilot by Uniqum Systems : Aberfeldy Distillery is located immediately to the east of the village of the same name; next to the former railway line and the main A827 road and overlooking the River Tay. The distillery lies in a beautiful setting, with close by woodland housing a rare colony of red squirrels. Originally built between 1896-8 by Perth-based blenders, John Dewar & Sons Ltd, it was extensively rebuilt during the 60s and 70s. Previously about a dozen distilleries had been opened in the Aberfeldy neighbourhood by men who had been smugglers in earlier times. Now part of John Dewar & Sons Ltd., Aberfeldy remains at the heart of the world famous Dewar's blend. Aberfeldy takes its water from the Pitilie Burn. The distillery sports a Visitors Centre ans a shop. From The book : The Malt Whisky File by Robin Tucek and John Lamond - The connoisseur's guide to malt whiskies and their distilleries. Built between 1896-8 by Perth-based blenders, John Dewar & Sons Ltd. Run by SMD since 1930, Dewar's having joined DCL in 1925. The distillery building is most impressive. The still house and tun-room were rebuilt in 1972/3 using the original stonework. Four stills. Now part of United Distillers plc, Aberfeldy remains at the heart of the world famous Dewar's blends.
